Cleaning KYDEX® Sheet TB 160

INTRODUCTION

KYDEX® sheet will retain its original beauty with reasonable handling and care. To ensure that your part maintains its original appearance, please review the following guidelines.

To clean KYDEX® sheet, dust it with a soft, damp cloth or chamois and wipe the surface gently. Use soap and lukewarm water to remove light dirt. After washing and rinsing, be sure to dry the surface by blotting with a damp cloth or chamois to prevent streaking and water spots.

For general (routine) cleaning, the following mild detergents and multi-purpose cleaners are recommended:

Normal cleaning methods may not remove ground in dirt or grease. To remove dirt or grease from texture valleys, a short stiff bristled brush should be used to loosen the material followed by a water rinse.

CLEANERS NOT RECOMMENDED

NOTE: The chemical composition of Goof-Off has recently been reformulated. This new formulation has been observed to have an affect on KYDEX® sheet. The previous formulation may be identified by the phrase “The Professional Cleaner” on the can and is produced by Valspar. This formulation is still recommended for use on KYDEX® sheet. The new formulation may be identified by the phrase “The Miracle Cleaner” on the can and is produced by W.M Barr & Co. SEKISUI KYDEX, LLC is investigating suitable alternatives to the Goof-Off product.

IN-USE SPOT CLEANING

Tough marks or stains due to spills, graffiti, heal marks, etc., usually require cleaners such as “DWR-II”, “Zep”, “Write Away” and Valspar’s “Goof-Off” provide good results when trying to remove graffiti marks. These are specialized spot cleaners that should be used for small areas only. A short stiff bristled brush may be necessary to remove some stains from the textured surface. These cleaners should also be rinsed thoroughly with clean water. Some heel marks or abrasions from rubber bumpers on carts may be removed simply by brushing without a cleaner.

IN-HOUSE TEST RESULTS

1. ArmorAll: Ok for general cleaning. Leaves a glossy, slick surface. Helps to reduce static build up.
2. Goof-Off Professional: Works well on Graffiti but did not completely remove marker on the deeper texture. Leaves a slightly dull surface but barely visible.
3. Goof-Off Graffiti Remover: Formulated with plastics in mind. Worked slightly better than Goof-Off Professional. Comes in a convenient spray can too. Leaves a slightly dull surface but barely visible.
4. Goo Gone (Spray Gel): Does not work as well as graffiti removers. Works best on sticker residue and waxy substances. The thick, pleasant smelling cleaner clings easily to vertical surfaces. Leaves a glossy, slick surface. Helps to reduce static build up.
5. Fantastik Orange Action: Okay for general cleaning. Leaves a glossy, slick surface. Helps to reduce static build up.

Note: To remove graffiti from deeper textures a bristle brush must be used. Several applications were also necessary. A soft bristle brush would be best because excess scrubbing could flatten, or dull the surface texture.

KYDEX® 510

KYDEX® 510 will retain its original beauty with reasonable handling and care. To ensure that you’re part maintains its original appearance, please review the following guidelines.

To clean KYDEX® 510, dust it with a soft, damp cloth or chamois and wipe the surface gently. Use soap and lukewarm water to remove light dirt. After washing and rinsing, be sure to dry the surface by blotting with a damp cloth or chamois.

In addition to the cleaners listed for all KYDEX® Products, the following cleaners maybe used on KYDEX® 510.

• Swish Detergent
• Handy Andy
• Calgonite
• Isopropanol only 45%

To remove heavy dirt or grease, Janitor in a Drum and Cascade were found to be the best cleaners to remove this type of dirt. Normal liquid cleaners or soap and water may not remove ground in dirt or grease. Stains such as iodine may be safely removed with 45% isopropanol (rubbing alcohol). The higher concentration commercial grades of isopropanol will remove the stain, but will dull the film surface. To return the gloss, wax with Simoniz wax. If you wish to increase the shine of your KYDEX® 510, wax the surface sparingly for protection and the highest degree of polish. Apply one of the following recommended commercial waxes sparingly in a thin, even film, with a soft, clean cloth.

RECOMMENDED WAXES:

1. Keep in mind that light surface scratches and abrasions can be removed by waxing with Simoniz paste wax. Deeper scratches may be removed by lightly buffing with a fine grade of rubbing compound. After application of the wax, polish the surface lightly with a clean cotton flannel or jersey. After polishing, wipe gently with a damp cloth to ground any electrostatic charges that may attract dust particles. When cleaning or waxing KYDEX® 510, do not use cloths containing grit or abrasive particles or kitchen scouring compounds to clean or dust the surface.
2. Also, do not use boiling water or any of the cleaners or waxes listed below, as they will soften or scratch the UV resistant coating.
